Ground Source Heat Pump
Installation

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs) also known as Geothermal Pumps offer an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional heating systems, drawing heat from the ground rather than using fossil fuels.

Our award winning team of engineers are expert heat pump installers in Norfolk and work to the highest of standards. Using equipment from industry leading manufacturers such as Viessman and Stiebel Eltron, we will take the time to get to know you and your property, offering advice and guidance throughout the full process. So if you’re in need of a ground source heat pump installer in Norfolk or the surrounding areas, get in touch today and invest in a more sustainable, greener future.

How do
Ground Source Heat Pumps work?

Renowned for our expert Ground Source Heat Pump installations in Norfolk, here at Heat Different we pride ourselves on our high quality installation and maintenance. The process of GSHP installation means that the mechanism is partly underground in the area surrounding your business premises or home.

Natural heat is extracted from the ground, created by solar energy from the sun or rain fall. Pipes full of cold liquid are placed under the ground, known as ground arrays. As heat is naturally drawn from warm to colder areas, the heat from the ground is transferred to the pipes, warming the liquid they contain.

This low grade heat is then passed through an evaporator which heats liquid refrigerant, the liquid refrigerant is then compressed, turning the liquid refrigerant into gas.

Next, this now high grade heat is extracted from the hot gas, and passed into water. This water then feeds into your heating system.

The cooled gas reverts back into a liquid and the cycle begins again!

Reduce your Co2 emissions
by up to 50%

As a renewable heating alternative, when you switch to a GSHP you will save money on your energy bills and the environmental benefits are huge, reducing your reliance on fossil fuels and your carbon footprint by up to 50%. Invest in your future by helping create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly society. Switching to renewable heating is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to a greener, cleaner future.

In addition to the above, when you install a geothermal pump, you could also receive an income from the Government via their Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.

What are the benefits
of Ground Source Heat Pumps?

As expert Ground Source Heat Pump installers, we’ve collated our knowledge on the benefits of these environmentally friendly systems. GSHPs are used in combination with central heating systems and underfloor heating. They are a popular choice and are leading the way in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. Some of the main benefits are:

Efficiency
Geothermal pumps are very efficient, thanks to the temperature consistency of the ground.  On a well-designed heating system with under-floor heating and a brine temperature of 0oC, GSHPs can reach efficiencies of up to 5.0kW of heat for every 1kW of electricity used. This is known as the COP (Coefficient of Performance). In comparison, electric storage heaters only have a COP of 1kW of heat to every 1kW of electricity used.

Non Obtrusive Installation
With a Ground Source Heat Pump installation all external pipework is buried under the ground. The main system is fitted internally, and our experienced engineers take the time to audit your property, ensuring that your system is placed in the most beneficial location and fitted with care.

Reliability
Owing to the lack of hot burners, GSHP systems are very reliable. Pair this with a support package as part of your aftercare to ensure regular servicing and maintenance and your GSHP won’t let you down.

Frequently Asked Questions
about Ground Source Heat Pumps

What is a Ground Source Heat Pump?

Although providing the same or similar benefits to an Air Source Heat Pump, the installation process of a GSHP differs slightly. With pipes running under the surface, the GSHP extracts heat from the ground as opposed to sourcing it from the air.

Using the same method as the ASHP, the heat from the ground will be taken into a ground loop of refrigerant fluid and then compressed to allow for hot air to flow through the other side, heating up your radiators and underfloor heating.

The amount of heat you will receive from the ground is all dependent on the size of your property and space available, as the larger the loop the greater the heat.

What are the pros of using a Ground Source Heat Pump?
  • Although when using GSHPs electricity is still required, the constant use of renewable energy makes this a great eco-friendly choice and has the possibility of lowering your overall energy bills.
  • Not only can it heat your home, but also your water.
  • It has a long life span with minimal maintenance required.
  • A more efficient option than the ASHP due to the stable nature of the ground’s temperature.
What are the cons of using a Ground Source Heat Pump?
  • A GSHP is slightly trickier to install and would require a greater amount of space than the ASHP, therefore smaller properties would be more suited to an ASHP which doesn’t require as much space and little or no external space.
  • The cost is more than an ASHP due to the groundworks and ground collector pipework costs.
How long will it take for my Ground Source Heat Pump to be installed?

The time to install a GSHP will be longer than the ASHP, due to the complexity of being installed into the ground. Installing a GSHP will require a considerable amount of digging, the time will also depend on how much work is needed, depending on the size of each property. However, interior installations are much simpler and do not require much time.

What are the types of properties a GSHP is and isn't suitable for?

A medium to large property is better suited for a GSHP due to the amount of pipework needed underground and outside. Once your property size has been determined, we can then work out how much work will be required, the time for installation and your cost.
